Earliest meeting: Friday 20th February 1863
Final meeting: Friday 20th February 1863
The Suffolk village of Moulton, on the River Kennett, is in the Forest Heath district of the county. It is steeped in history, pre-dating the Domesday Book, and boasts a 15th century pack horse bridge over the river. In the 1860s it hosted the Newmarket Hunt Steeplechases, with a meeting taking place on Friday 20th February 1863. The 3 ½ mile steeplechase course was over good hunting ground on the outskirts of the village and the card opened with the Handicap Plate over 2 miles which saw Mr Elyod’s Antelope beat Sunflower and Diadem. The principal race, the Newmarket Grand Handicap Steeplechase, was run over 3 ½ miles and the odds on 4/5 favourite Molly Asthore rewarded those who took the odds. Newmarket Hunt meetings lapsed after this meeting, but returned 16 years later on a course nearer Newmarket at Kennett.

This racecourse is covered in Volume 1 of Racecourses Here Today and Gone Tomorrow. Ordering details shown below.
